Lisa Vasquez started Stitched Smile Publications, LLC. on an idea. Writing should be about love of the word, and passion for the story. The rest is just business. Treating people with fairness was a value planted within her as a young child and never left. Taking the old saying, "Do what you love and you'll never work a day in your life," she began laying the groundwork for the company you see now.

We teach, we mentor, and we get our hands dirty. If you have the drive to work, and the patience for learning, we have the time to give any author who comes into SSP - no matter what level they start at - a shot at their dream.

Here, at Stitched Smile Publications, education and giving back to our communities is important to us. We have interns from various colleges on staff to give them hands-on, real life experience in the publishing industry. Our interns learn every aspect of the company, from editing, to formatting, and they even get in on the social media action! We have even opened up to Design and Illustration interns! Giving students a chance to see what it is like behind the wheel is not only exciting and rewarding for us, it allows them to take that experience wherever they go in their chosen fields.

The Stitched Smile Culture is a little different than a lot of the other publishing companies, and it's what makes us special. For two years we've cultivated various different methods; trial and error is the basis of every successful business. What works, we keep. What doesn't, we toss out.

As CEO, I'd like to walk you through the culture of what it's like to be a part of the Stitched Family. I feel this is important because many authors, and potential authors, come in and see things done differently elsewhere and they end up feeling confused, or lost. Therefore, knowing what to expect coming into the family, every author is prepared to make their own decision on whether this is the home for you, or not.

At Stitched Smile Publications, editing is a huge deal. In fact, it's a deal breaker for other pub houses. If your story isn't edited well enough, has plot holes, lacking character development, or has too many grammatical errors ... your story is declined.

Here at SSP, we take into consideration whether the author has an amazing idea, potential to grow, and is worth the time and effort on our behalf to work with them. In the past, authors didn't realize what kind of time and dedication this entailed. Our editors will not write the book for you. Each one of them was, in a sense, mentoring authors as they edited. They were teaching authors skills to write a better manuscript. We may spend up to two years working with some authors on a single manuscript. Some may say that's insane, and it is. However, it's the kind of commitment we invest in every single one of our authors. If the author is willing to put in the work, so are we!

But, why?
I'm so glad you asked! Stitched Smile Publications is a teaching company. We hire interns who are in college to pursue careers in editing or publishing and we are teaching them, and the authors, how to be better at what they do. We aren't only investing in the author, we're investing in the future.

A Change
Once a manuscript is submitted, it will now go to either a folder marked "send to editor" or "send to mentoring". If the manuscript goes directly to an editor, the editor will take on the story and the manuscript will go through a minimum of three passes by three different people. This takes as long as it takes.

If your manuscript goes to the mentor pile, you will be offered a mentoring partnership with one of our VIP authors for a 30-60 day period where you and your mentor will work on your story, concepts, etc., in order to get it ready for editors. A contract is signed to publish your work ensuring that our time is paid off and your manuscript comes to fruition. This takes as long as it takes, and mostly falls on the author to put in the time and work.

The Difference
Previously, we sent the author to the editor for mentoring and it got hairy. Authors did not understand their story was chosen for potential, not because it was ready for print. So, going forward, we have altered our practice and this will be implemented immediately.

Everything takes time here. It's a slow process because we only want the best and we'll only deliver the best. How long a book takes will be as much your responsibility as ours. If you still feel House of Stitched is your home, please submit your story and we will contact you within 4 - 6 weeks. If you're interested in only mentoring, please email me at vasquez@stitchedsmilepublications.com

Warmest Regards,
Lisa Vasquez
